Broken Top
Bend, Oregon
The oldest and most eroded of the five major volcanoes located in the Three Sisters region of Oregon is Broken Top. Even today glaciers continue to erode and change the face of this volcano and although there are portions that are not appropriate for skiing, there are still quite a few fabulous ski routes inside the steep walls of the crater and the ridges and flanks outside. Through out the winter and early spring, Broken Top has a relatively easy access from the Mount Bachelor Ski Area even while all of the access roads leading to this portion of Three Sisters Wilderness are lost in snow cover.
Remember that vehicles are not permitted with the Three Sisters Wilderness, including Broken Top. If you are interested in scenic view, you should follow the Cascade Lakes Highway west from Bend, Oregon. To gain close access to the south slopes, you'll want to follow the secondary road from Todd Lake then head west to the trailheads at Crater Creek. If the north slopes are your destination, you should follow Three Creek Lake Highway south from Sisters to trailheads north of Tam Mc Arthur Rim.
A memorable experience with breathtaking views, Broken Top is not an experience to pass up.
