The San Francisco Museum and Historical Society is a non-profit organization focused on preserving, interpreting, and presenting the historical heritage of San Francisco, from its variegated natural history to its lively human history.

The Society fulfills these objectives through a broad spectrum of exhibitions, programs and special events, and The Argonaut, our beautiful journal featuring photographs and in-depth reviews of our city's history. The Society currently has exhibitions at Pier 45 and City Hall.

The Society was organized in February 2002, following the merger of the San Francisco Historical Society and the Museum of the City of San Francisco.

The Society is proud to present monthly lecture programs covering a variety of topics of historic interest. Speakers include authors and historians, often accompanied by slide presentations. Monthly programs are open to the public and held on the second Tuesday of the month. ($5 donation requested from SFMHS non-members, which may be applied toward membership)

In addition to providing guided walking tours of the Barbary Coast Trail, the Society sponsors architectural and history walking tours throughout San Francisco’s districts and neighborhoods. Walking tours are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted in the Calendar of Events.

The Society also holds special events and fund raisers, including an annual Home Tour, and Dinner/Auction. Visit the events calendar for current programs, walking tours, and special events.
